Alexa supports linking outside calendar accounts directly, but you’re limited to Google, Microsoft, or Apple iCloud. As far as features go, the new Chromecast still allows users to cast from iOS and Android apps on their phone to the TV screen. It also has a decent ability to deal with commands issued with accents. If you are not a native speaker of the supported languages, you'll find Google Home's voice assistant to be more accommodating.

If you want something to pair with a smaller TV or to go into a games room the Sonos Ray is an excellent choice, and it's also the one I'd choose if you want something that's going to play a lot of tunes. Meanwhile the Sonos Beam's bigger, louder sound means it's suited to larger rooms and it sounds a whole lot better with movies. There are a number of key advantages to using an HDMI cable including HDMI which controls power between the units, as well as advanced formats like Dolby Atmos. Of course, while the Beam is designed to take advantage of this format the Ray cannot.

Google Home's ecosystem trails Alexa in the number of supported devices. According to Statista, Google Assistant is compatible with more than 50,000 devices made by thousands of manufacturers globally. One of the drawbacks of using a voice assistant is challenges with language, dialect, and accent. Google Assistant beats both Alexa and Siri in all three metrics. It supports more than 40 languages and several dialects for some of those languages.

Reliability is important for any sort of assistant, virtual or not. I kept track of how often I needed to repeat myself or rephrase a question for an assistant to get it. All three assistants did pretty well, occasionally requiring a repeated or rephrased query but generally answering requests promptly and to the best of the devices' abilities. At the moment, Alexa and Google are about even, and Siri is pretty competent, even if it's missing a couple of major partners.

It completely filled the room when we tried it out, with plenty of bass and a lot of volume. We wouldn’t call it portable, but if you’re leaving it in one spot, this is the best Alexa option out there. One area where Alexa isn’t all that customisable is the voice itself, you can change its language to British English, change its accent, and pick between feminine and masculine voices, but that’s it.

The Sonos Ray may be a stereo soundbar but it includes Dolby Digital decoding as well as tweeter waveguides which make the soundbar sound much bigger than it really is. The Beam can take advantage of Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Atmos audio formats too, and sounds even bigger. One of the major additions to the new Sonos Beam Gen 2 was Dolby Atmos support, but it didn't involve any hardware changes -- only software. Despite its lack of dedicated height speakers, the Beam is actually really good at simulating height effects -- better than anything else that's comparable at this price or below.

And, of course, all three are all evolving at a rapid clip. If you can only afford the entry-level devices, and music remains a top priority for you, go for the Google Home Mini, which sounds a lot better than the Echo Dot. Unless you hook up a Dot to another speaker over Bluetooth or the 3.5mm jack, it's just too thin and harsh to fully enjoy. Keep in mind that, with both Alexa and Google Assistant, third-party speaker manufacturers are increasingly choosing to integrate the voice helpers into their own products. Recently Google launched a follow up to its smallest smart speaker; the Google Nest Mini comes with three speakers (that's one more than the original), and is made from recycled materials. Like the Echo Dot, the speaker is puck shaped, if a little more pebble-like with softer edges, and has a top side covered in a fabric speaker mesh.

If, for example, you want something that you can use to have family group calls, go for the Echo. If you want something compatible with Chromecast, go for the Google Nest Audio. If you want something that you can use to control your home security and lighting, either speaker would be a fine choice. Plus it’s also possible to connect the Dot to other speakers using Bluetooth or the 3.5mm jack. If you want a versatile device that can deliver solid audio quality and give you control over your smart home while remaining affordable, then the Echo Dot with Clock is the best Alexa accessory around.

And with the rapid pace of innovation in all of these technologies, it's hard to go wrong by spending time with any of these voice assistants — even if none of them knows when exactly my bus will get here. Thanks to a recent software update, you can use Siri on your iPhone or the HomePod to control music and podcast playback on an Apple TV or other AirPlay speakers. But Siri can't handle any other functions, such as turning the device on or off, opening apps, or playing videos. However, both Google Assistant and Alexa also come built in to a number of third-party smart speakers; if you want Siri in a smart speaker, the only option is to purchase Apple's HomePod. Sure, it’s a step up from your phone’s speakers, but not a match for a decent, dedicated Bluetooth speaker.

In practice, there's very little brand differentiation for the things you'll do most often with voice controls. Alexa sounds more sympathetic than Google, but not as confident. Still, we suppose emotional sensitivity is better than the hasty confidence behind Google Assistant's voice. You can add as many locations as you like by using the settings menu in the Alexa app. This is great for helping Alexa know where to jump into action when you want to do something. You simply ask Google to help you speak a particular language or to turn on interpreter mode, and it does the rest.

Its directions to local spots were reasonable, but it was utterly unable to handle public transit. And when I asked about traffic conditions on the local interstate, its estimates were a lot rosier than Google’s—and I know which one I’d trust. A new feature is supposed to allow you to send traffic conditions to your phone, but it never worked for me—Alexa just kept telling me she couldn’t find that device. With Alexa, you can call and send messages in audio or text to any other Alexa user in your contacts ; you can also call any phone number or any contact whose phone number you have in your contacts.
